Poi-Hooping
Sean Stogner, of The Gyronauts will be taking you through the basics associated with Poi-Hooping: Timing/Direction, 2 Beat, 3 Beat, Thread the Needle, Fountains, Flowers, etc. Also, perhaps a little Partner Hooping. Prerequisites: Off-Body Hooping, and at least a Basic Knowledge of Poi.
Here’s a little insight into Sean’s perspective…
Circus is so very wonderful to me, because I know that no matter where I go, I can always find welcoming, like-minded individuals. That’s why I do it. That’s why I love it.
I’m a recent NYU graduate with a B.F.A. in Theatre. While in NYC, Tash introduced me to the world of Hooping back in 2006. And I’ve been fascinated ever since. I subsequently stumbled into the culture of Burning Man, Poi, and all things skill toys. For me, growing up in suburban Dallas, it was a bit of a culture shock. I soon began to realize, however, that the community I’d experienced in Theatre, existed 10 times over in the circus arts community. It’s an incredible feeling, knowing that when you see someone else spinning poi, or hooping, anywhere in the world, you can simply walk up to them and say hi. Especially in a place like NYC, where everyone shuts down, the ability to break through those barriers using circus arts is a very powerful thing.
And so, in turn, I’ve tried to dedicate much of my time to furthering this community. Whether it be teaching lessons, blogging, performing, or simply jamming, I strive to spread circus love.
And here’s a little bit of Sean doing what he loves and a nibble on what he’ll be teaching at PLAY Immersion:
Plus, he’s just an all-around swell guy!
